Estuarine colonization, population structure and nursery functioning for 0-group sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), flounder (Platichthys flesus) and sole (Solea solea) in a mesotidal temperate estuary ArchiMer
Martinho, F; Leitao, R; Neto, J; Cabral, H; Lagardere, Francoise; Pardal, M.
The function of the Mondego estuary as a fish nursery habitat was investigated from June 2003 to June 2004 by comparing the timing of estuarine colonization with juveniles of sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax, flounder Platichthys flesus, and sole Solea solea, while also analysing their population structure, growth and diet composition. Differences in the onset of estuarine colonization were observed, since sole juveniles were the first to enter the estuary (in January), followed by flounder in April and sea bass in June. The estuarine population of these species consisted of several age-groups, although the majority of individuals belonged to age-groups 0 and 1. The growth rates determined for 0-group fish were within the range of those reported for other...

Etude de la composition corporelle de la sole (Solea solea ) au cours du jeune: Influence de la temperature ArchiMer
Richard, P; Djabali, M; Lagardere, Francoise; Lagardere, J.
The effects of starvation on Solea solea at 10 and 20 degree C in sea water, were studied. At 20 degree C fishes start to die on week 4; at 10 degree C they support a longer starvation period (9 weeks). Proximate analysis shows that protein are more steadily used at 20 degree C than at 10 degree C, contrarily to the corporal lipids which are used at the same rate. Starvation results in a reduction of liver lipids and glycogen. This reduction is more pronounced at 20 degree C : 70% of hepatic glycogen is used at this temperature within the first week of starvation against 30% at 10 degree C.

Growth performances of juvenile sole Solea solea under environmental constraints of embayed nursery areas ArchiMer
Laffargue, Pascal; Lagardere, Francoise; Rijnsdorp, Adriaan D.; Fillon, Alain; Amara, Rachid.

Metamorphosis and estuarine colonisation in the common sole, Solea solea (L.): implications for recruitment regulation ArchiMer
Amara, Rachid; Lagardere, Francoise; Desaunay, Yves; Marchand, Jocelyne.
Processes involved in both metamorphosis and settlement of young sole were studied at the population, cohort and individual level in order to evaluate their role in survival and recruitment regulation. Metamorphosis can be defined as a phase of variable duration (10 days on average) at the end of which the larval period of pelagic dissemination is completed. Size at the onset of metamorphosis is considerably less variable than age and is less plastic to environmental change. Metamorphosis is triggered by the acquisition of a competent size and a sufficient store of energy supplies, and occurs without a nutritional crisis or growth arrest. In addition, changes in organogenesis and behaviour that occur during metamorphosis seem to contribute to horizontal...

Otoliths imprinting of sole (Solea solea) from the Bay of Biscay: a tool to discriminate individuals from nursery origins? ArchiMer
De Pontual, Helene; Lagardere, Francoise; Troadec, Herve; Batel, Alain; Desaunay, Yves; Koutsikopoulos, Constantin.
Sole nurseries are located in the main bays and estuaries of the Bay of Biscay, where juveniles from the same stock. concentrate and constitute temporarily isolated groups. This context being favourable for elemental analyses of juvenile otoliths this study has been initiated with the aim of obtaining environmental imprints of the main nurseries of origin of juveniles recruiting to the adult stock, and of evaluating the relative contribution of these nurseries to the stock. The objectives were to compare (i) the otolith elemental imprints obtained by sampling juveniles in the Loire and the Gironde nurseries, and (ii) two multi-element analysis techniques: laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) and solution-based ICPMS...

Parasitic infection of sole Solea solea by Prosorhynchus spp. metacercariae (Digenea, Bucephalidae) in Atlantic nurseries under mussel cultivation influence ArchiMer
Laffargue, Pascal; Baudouin, G; Sasal, P; Arnaud, Christophe; Begout, Marie-laure; Lagardere, Francoise.
Cysts of metacercariae were obtained on 2 dates from juvenile sole Solea solea sea-sampled in an area of mussel cultivation (Pertuis Charentais, Bay of Biscay, France). An initial assessment of parasite genus and infestation level was based on 192 cysts extracted from 2 fish samples, taken in August (n = 20) and December 2000 (n = 14). Our results confirmed the sole as second intermediate host of bucephalid trematodes of the genus Prosorhynchus, which has not previously been noticed in Atlantic stocks. Prevalence, ca. 65% on both dates, indicated an substantial infestation of these small fish, with a mean abundance of parasites increasing from August (3.3 +/- 1.1) to December (8.1 +/- 3.4). Cysts were localised in all body parts of the host, and...

Population structure of the common sole (Solea solea) in the Northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea: revisiting the divide with EPIC markers ArchiMer
Rolland, Jean-luc; Bonhomme, Francois; Lagardere, Francoise; Hassan, M; Guinand, Bruno.
Spatial and temporal population genetic structures of the common sole, Solea solea, were studied in Northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea populations, using three polymorphic exon-primed intron-crossing (EPIC) markers. Results demonstrated significant multilocus differentiation among Eastern Mediterranean and a group composed by Western Mediterranean and Atlantic populations (theta = 0.150, P < 0.001), but also suggested unrecorded genetic differentiation of the Adriatic Sea population. No pattern of isolation-by-distance was recorded across the range covered by sampling, from the Kattegat to the Aegean Sea. Conversely to genetically structured Mediterranean populations, Atlantic populations ranging from Denmark to Portugal could be considered as...

Tagging juvenile seabass and sole with telemetry transmitters: medium-term effects on growth ArchiMer
Begout, Marie-laure; Coves, Denis; Dutto, Gilbert; Laffargue, Pascal; Lagardere, Francoise.
The effects of tagging with acoustic transmitters on the growth of juvenile seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) (initial mean mass +/- SD, 173 g +/- 23.4) in a 47 d tank experiment, and sole. Solea solea (L.) ( 103.2 g +/- 14.8) in a 72 d tank experiment and (104.0 g +/- 18.4) in a 58 d salt marsh mesocosm experiment were examined. Twenty externally tagged seabass grew more slowly than the 20 with surgically implanted tags, which reached the same mass as nine control fish. Movements of the external transmitter's harness caused abrasions of the skin and loss of the tag in 60% of the cases. We thus recommend implanting transmitters for telemetry studies of juvenile seabass weighing between 120 and 214 g and carrying a tag that represents 2.2-2.5% of body...

Temporal changes in lipid condition and parasitic infection by digenean metacercariae of young-of-year common sole Solea solea (L.) in an Atlantic nursery ground (Bay of Biscay, France) ArchiMer
Durieux, Eric; Galois, Robert; Begout, Marie-laure; Sasal, Pierre; Lagardere, Francoise.
Little attention has been paid to flatfish parasitism as a potential factor of variation in year-class strength. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between parasitic infection and nutritional condition of young-of-year (YOY) common sole. Sole were collected monthly from May (early settlement) to November 2004 in a mussel pole culture area, using a push-net or a trawl, and dissected for parasite identification and counts. Total lipids were extracted from the whole body and lipid classes quantified. Triacylglycerols to sterols (free form) ratio (TAG/ST) was used as an index of nutritional status. Digenean metacercariae infection, characterized by two dominant genera, displayed clear seasonal dynamics and the highest records yet reported...

Testing the potential effects of shellfish farming on swimming activity and spatial distribution of sole (Solea solea) in a mesocosm ArchiMer
Laffargue, Pascal; Begout, Marie-laure; Lagardere, Francoise.
Restructuring coastal fish nursery habitats by extensive shellfish fanning in the French part of the Bay of Biscay could influence fish physiology and behaviour and affect the ecological performance of the species. The influence of oyster-trestle cultivation installations on sole (Solea solea) swimming behaviour was investigated using an experimental pond mesocosm. A pen was constructed with three interconnected zones (two with bags of live oysters or oyster shells on trestles, and one free zone). Water renewal depended on the tide. Environmental variables were recorded continuously (temperature, oxygen, pH, meteorological data), every 3-5 days (salinity, samples taken for water analysis and estimation of sedimentation rate) or intermittently...
